What Sync Licensing Actually Is

A sync license is the formal authorisation required to pair music with visual content. Whether it’s used in a movie, TV show, advertisement, trailer, video game, social media project, or corporate presentation, a sync license must be obtained for the song’s use.

Two rights are always involved :

Master rights

the actual sound recording (owned by a label or artist)

Publishing rights

the underlying composition (owned by a publisher or songwriter) .
